A Point Pelee Birding and Wine Escape.

Everyone knows that the early bird gets the worm, and the same rule applies to the birders trying to see them. You’ll want to get an early start to see the birds during their most active time of the day, so plan to stay at a hotel near Point Pelee the night before your birding expedition. Comfort Inn Leamington and Best Western Leamington are great options.

While visiting Point Pelee National Park, be sure to take the ‘Shuttle to the Tip,” a free daily shuttle which runs from April through October to transport visitors to the most southern tip of mainland Canada to a special outdoor exhibit highlighting the migration phenomenon. Don’t forget your camera! Check the Shuttle Stop at the Visitor Centre for up to the minute schedule.

If your bird watching experience leaves you feeling like you might need some new gear, stop by Pelee Wings Nature Store in Leamington, where you’ll find the largest selection of binoculars in Canada and plenty of other outdoor gear.

That afternoon spend some time at Mastronardi Estate Winery. Tastings are available in their wine boutique and private tours can be booked in advance for a small fee. For a second winery stop, head to nearby Pelee Island Winery in Kingsville, it’s Canada’s largest estate-owned winery and makes wines from grapes grown on its 600 acres of vineyards on Pelee Island.

Enjoy dinner at Jack’s Gastropub in Kingsville. The owners take pride in sourcing local produce, fish and meats for the menus.

The next morning, head to the Jack Miner Bird Sanctuary. Miner pioneered the banding of migrating waterfowl and the sanctuary offers a truly memorable experience to connect with nature and see peacocks, exotic pheasants, wild turkeys and tundra swans.
