Located in Southwestern Ontario, Norfolk County is situated along the north shore of beautiful Lake Erie. Our landscape is dominated by Carolinian forests, pristine farm land, as well as friendly towns and villages. Our beaches and parks are some of Ontario’s best and Long Point Bay is famous for its sport fishing. Walking and biking our trail systems and country roads is becoming a major attraction for both residents and guests. Our County’s heritage and culture can be experienced through a variety of special events, summer festivals, parades and theatre. The most popular destinations of Norfolk County are the ports, towns and villages along Lake Erie, known as Ontario’s South Coast. As a lover of the outdoors and a person that ďŹ nds her zen in nature, I am delighted to call Norfolk County my home. Our mild climate, fertile land, lake, trails and forests make this region a true gem for the nature lover. Hailing from the north, I simply couldn't have found a better place to settle down, raise a family and operate a wellness business. GoNorfolk was born in the fall of 2016. The aim was to empower people to get moving around the county and explore our unique sights and offerings. Through the ďŹ rst year of the project, my family and my tribe experienced some unique adventures and breathtaking sceneries. I absolutely love sharing my passion for Norfolk County with locals and visitors alike, there is so much to discover!

BEACHES Our beaches are fabulous and they are totally worth the detour. Let’s start with Long Point! This is a sight you can’t miss. 40 km of sandy beach, so beautiful and unique. It has been recognized as a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. This is a little heaven for boaters and anglers. I love to go out with my family to soak up the sunshine, swim and stroll down the beach. Long Point is also a prime spot for birding. The area’s wetland and forests offer the perfect setting for catching a glimpse of over 400 species of birds. Turkey Point is high on my list of favorite spots in the area. Find your bliss in the summertime with water fun including seadoo rentals, flyboarding, top notch marina and awesome patios. While you are here, make a pit stop in Port Dover, get on a paddleboard and enjoy the beautiful scenery of this charming lakeside town. Enjoy the wheelchair accessible beach, stop in for an ice cream and stay for dinner in one of our fine dining or casual restaurants.
TRAILS The trail network in Norfolk County is simply spectacular. If you are a hiker, walker or cyclist, you will be amazed by the variety of recreational trails. The Turkey Point Mountain Bike Club trails offer 80+km of single track groomed trails ideal for
beginners, avid riders and trail runners. The Carolinian forest offers an incredible backdrop for all thrill seekers. Norfolk County is also the home of 45 km of converted rail trails. The Lynn Valley Trail is one of my favorite sections, connecting Port Dover to Simcoe. The wide trail offers various habitats including mixed woods, wetlands, open grassland and agricultural land, all along the scenic Lynn River. Fantastic for cyclists, walkers and runners, this trail also connects to the Waterford Heritage Trail and the Delhi Trail for a full day’s adventure! Let’s not forget Backus Woods’ trail! This is a stunning location for hiking and walking, snowshoeing, backcountry cross country skiing, mountain biking and winter (fat) biking. There you will find 12 km of self-interpreting trails winding through 700 magnificent acres.
CAMPING If adventure is in your blood, you will be pleased with your experience in Norfolk County. Long Point Eco Adventures is your luxury glamping paradise. Choose a wilderness suite for the full comfort experience or book a camping pod for a more rustic stay. LPEA is truly an amazing place. Soak up the breathtaking view of the Long Point Bay and enjoy a full array of thrill seeking activities. Do as much or as little as
you want while you connect to nature and disconnect from your busy home routine. For a more rugged time, our Provincial Parks and local Conservation Authorities will create the perfect setting for you to make memories. From sand to forest to historical sites, you have many options for camping experiences. The Long Point Provincial Park offers incredible camping sites. You can literally have your feet in the sand while having a campfire!

In today’s day and age there is a serious need to engage youth in the outdoors. Fishing is one of the greatest ways. It provides young and old a chance to build independence and build memories. Fishing is also a very easy way to enjoy the outdoors with minimal expense. Here are some things to consider when taking kids ďŹ shing that will make time on the water enjoyable for everyone.

1) Location: Be sure to scout locations that are both easy to access and fish may be plentiful. Don’t worry about catching your next trophy fish. Kids are happy catching any fish. The more fish they catch the more they will want to be challenged with larger fish, different species, etc. See links at the bottom of this article for information on fishing locations. 2) Fishing Equipment: Often anglers can be guilty of complicating this part of the process. Keeping it simple for kids is important. Reels: A good quality spin-cast or spinning reel is great for beginners. Spin-cast reels are easy to cast and maintain. Rods: A light to medium action rod between 4’ to 5' in length is a good start for beginners also. Shorter rods are easier to transport and can result in less tangles. Line: A spool of good quality in 6lb or 8lb monofilament is great. It is cheap and reliable. Tackle: Again the ‘keep it simple’ rule applies for tackle. Hooks, weights/sinkers and bobbers are great for getting started. Live-bait like nightcrawlers/worms are readily accessible for most anglers at local tackle shops, gas stations and variety stores. Don’t be afraid to consider artificial baits. Many companies like Berkley make a vast array of artificial baits, which can be easily stored at home and are ready at a moment’s notice. A small assortment of small jig-heads is all you need for artificial baits. 3) Fishing Safety: Life Jackets: It is imperative that anglers with children always keep safety first. When kids, and parents, wear life jackets regularly it becomes part of the experience. Life jackets will more than pay for themselves the first time they are used. Hooks: Hooks are sharp and also have barbs. These should be handled by adults while fishing. Parents can easily take a pair of needle nosed pliers and press/pinch barbs flat. Hooks with flat barbs allow for easier unhooking of fish and reduced risk of hooking injuries while fishing. 4) Additional Equipment: When taking kids fishing, preparation may involve some unique components to make for a successful day. Some items families should include while fishing are: drinking water, sunscreen, snacks, insect repellant, rain jacket/pants, hats, first-aid kit, and sunglasses.
Casting: The preferred cast for young children is likely a sidearm cast. Teach a child to look over their shoulder to make sure it is safe to cast. Then bring the rod back behind them keeping it above their waist. As they sweep the rod forward they can release the line just prior to pointing at the target. This all takes time and often can be practiced at home on the lawn with just a weight and bobber. Detecting a Bite: The easiest way to detect bites is to use a hook and bobber/float setup. Teach kids that when a fish bites, the bobber will be pulled or slide under the water’s surface. At this point they can set the hook. Demonstrate setting the hook much like demonstrating the casting technique. Playing and Landing a Fish: This can take time but could be the most enjoyable part of the day. Once a fish is hooked the key is to reel slowly and keeping the rod bent. Children will likely ask for help so be there to help out. A landing net is always fun to land a fish. Often if there are multiple children, taking turns operating the net and catching fish is a great way to teach team skills. Even for small fish. Capturing the Memory Quickly and Release: It is important to take pictures of your catch but don’t hold the fish out of water for too long. A quick photo is all it takes to make a great memory last forever. Once a photo is taken, quickly release the fish if desired. Also, keeping a few fish for the table is great. Be sure to follow the regulations in your area and also the Ontario Guide to Eating Sportfish (see link below). After all of this be sure to HAVE FUN! This is the primary objective and regardless of the number of fish caught having fun is the greatest part of the trip! Norfolk County is home to unique growing conditions for grapes which have allowed the area to develop into an emerging wine region. Its most distinctive feature is the Norfolk Sand Plain with well draining soils. A gently sloping landscape with sands ranging in various depths underground allow for warmer temperatures earlier in spring, and commencement of vineyard activities. A long frost-free period near Lake Erie gives Norfolk County another unique locational advantage, with exposure to the prevailing south-westerly winds that cross the lake along a fetch that is more than 200 km in length. The open waters of Lake Erie help keep temperatures moderate in the middle of summer, while extending the warming period in the fall, thus allowing grapes to achieve their full ripening potential. The proximity to this open body of water has created two temperature zones. The lakeshore zone (approximately 5 km in width) allows the penetration of strong moderating lake breeze and a warmer zone where the lake breeze penetration is weak. Norfolk County possesses good growing conditions for a wide range of grape varieties such as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Riesling, and Cab Franc, shared with other established viticultural areas in Ontario. With all its climatic and soils attributes, the region has a unique terroir that encourages continued growth of its local wine industry, producing high-quality vintages that have garnered wide spread recognition and acclaim.

New Limburg Brewery This amazing small craft brewery serves up delicious Belgian style beers, and amazing snacks (cheese boards, sausage rolls, etc.). Set in an old, refurbished school in rural Norfolk County, the bar has a piano, cozy chairs, and plenty of board games (Yahtzee!). Enjoy some bitterballen (a delicious Dutch meat snack) and a sampling flight of 4 beers for a hip afternoon!
Blue Elephant Brewpub Does Thai food and freshly brewed beer sound like a good combination to you? Many beers are made with fresh, local fruit (Strawberry beer!), or have an interesting tie to the Norfolk County community. This brewpub is located inside of a full-service restaurant that serves up some of the best chicken wings in the county, along with some amazing Thai food (the Thai egg rolls and Pad Thai are a huge hit).
Top Dog Cider We’re still waiting for these guys to open an official tasting bar, but for now you can purchase Top Dog Ciders at Blueberry Hill Estate Winery. This cider is brewed by the Hounds of Erie Winery (they also make wine), and they have won numerous national awards for their ciders to date.

Make sure you call ahead and make a reservation at this popular, farm-to-table restaurant. Enjoy local beer or wine or try one of their amazing cocktails (the Pimm’s cup is delightful). These guys really know their food; it’s all good here from their stone-oven baked pizzas, to their steaks and their side dishes (those brussel sprouts!).

The Crepe House The concept for this restaurant started small, with the owners selling crepes from a small cart in a park in Port Dover. Now a full-fledged restaurant, serving crepes for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with one of the best patios in Port Dover in the summer (and serving some of the best cocktails too!). Featured on the Canadian show, You Gotta Eat Here, guests drive from near and far to try all the different crepe combinations, from the Big Breakfast (eggs, sausage, brown beans & maple syrup), to Turkey Dinner (turkey, stuffing, gravy & cranberry), and of course sweet crepes like the Autumn Harvest (apples & cheddar).

Norfolk offers a wide range of activities for seniors. There is both a professional and community theatre, to satisfy your yen for live productions. You can even become directly involved on or off-stage in the community theatre. Norfolk is a vibrant arts community boasting an artists’ workshop in Simcoe and several public galleries throughout the county. Perhaps you would like to take a class with one of the many local artists in their studio and every fall enjoy one of the finest Studio Tours in Ontario. If action is more to your liking, you can kayak or canoe along Black Creek, walk our beautiful Lynn Valley Trail or meander along Long Point Beach. Walking groups are available throughout the county both indoor and out. If you play tennis, pickleball or love to curl, this is the place for you. We have the finest golf courses, reasonably priced and with senior teams you can join. Norfolk boasts an indoor and outdoor pool as well as Lake Erie for swimming. There are great boating
opportunities along the lake shore with yacht clubs and boat launches. Yoga classes are available throughout the county at all hours of the day and evening. If you prefer Tai Chi we have that; as well as Nia, Qigong and others. Probus, Lions and Rotary are well supported in Norfolk and a wonderful way to meet new people and learn about the community. That said, the Newcomers Club welcomes anyone new to the community and organizes social activities to suit most every taste. Are you into researching your ancestry? The Eva Brook Donly Museum and Archives is a “treasure trove of information for the genealogist” so its Facebook page tells us. History buffs will be delighted to know that every community in Norfolk enjoys its own museum.
